The Design Maker is a creative tool you can use to customize products directly in your Printful Dashboard. Whether you’re uploading your own artwork or building something from scratch using our built-in features, the Design Maker helps you create print-ready files and product mockups that can be pushed straight to your store.
Getting started
You can access the Design Maker in two ways:
- From the Printful catalog: Choose any product and click Start designing to open the Design Maker.
- From your Dashboard → Product Templates: Click Create product to build reusable Product Templates.
Once you’ve selected a product, you’ll see available customization techniques like DTG or DTFlex printing, embroidery, cut & sew, and more. Each technique may have different design requirements, so keep an eye on any specific file format guidelines.
Creating your design
Once inside the Design Maker, you can:
- Upload your own design files.
- Use text tools to add messages with custom fonts, colors, and even graphic fills.
- Add clipart from a variety of themed groups.
- Try Quick Designs, which are editable, pre-made layouts you can customize freely.
- Use Premium Images to add licensed stock graphics, patterns, and vector art. These cost $1 per use and can’t be downloaded as standalone print files.
- Choose from free sample files available in the File library.
All uploaded or selected assets are stored in your File library, making them easy to reuse.
Design placement and editing
- Place your design on different print areas (front, back, sleeves, labels, etc.).
- Resize, move, rotate, or layer your elements as needed.
- Use the print quality warning to make sure your image resolution is high enough.
- Fill print areas with background colors, patterns, or Premium Images.
- Preview your product in 3D or mockup views for a more realistic look.
Advanced tools for all-over print products
- Use the Fill tab to apply backgrounds or full-surface prints.
- Use the Pattern Tool to create repeat patterns with clipart, uploads, or sample files.
- Adjust spacing, rotation, and pattern alignment using on-screen sliders and controls.
- Duplicate elements to other placements using the Layers panel.
Saving and exporting
Once you’re happy with your design:
- Click Save product template to keep your design safe.
- Click Add to store to push it to your connected store.
- Or click Download mockups to get product images you can use for marketing.
Design guidelines
Each product has specific formatting requirements. You’ll find these under the Product tab in the Design Maker, or in the product description under the File guidelines tab.
