What are the most common Shopify integration errors and how do I fix them?

While Shopify syncs automatically to Printful, some errors may pop up during store connection, product publishing, or inventory syncing. Below are the most common integration errors grouped by category and how to resolve each one.

Connection and sync issues

Why can't I connect my Shopify store to Printful?

This can happen if your Shopify store is already connected to a different Printful account. You’ll need to: 

1. Log in to that other account and go to the Printful Dashboard → Settings → Store settings → General → Remove store. 
2. Then reconnect the store to the account you want to use.
   If you can't access the other account, contact our Support Team to help regain access.

If the store isn't linked to any Printful account yet, try these steps in order:

• Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then try connecting again.
• Try connecting in a different browser, an incognito or private window, or a different device.
• Follow the connection steps for Shopify exactly, since a skipped step (like an app permission) is a common cause.

Why does my Shopify store show an “Unavailable Shop” or sync error?

This error means Printful can't reach or verify your Shopify store. Work through this checklist:

1. Click Reconnect if it appears next to the error (Stores → View store, or My products → Published)

2. Open your store's URL directly to confirm it's publicly accessible, not password-protected, and not down.
3. Double-check the store URL connected in Printful → Store settings for typos or an outdated address.
4. Confirm your Shopify plan is active. A store on an expired free trial can't sync.
5. Check whether the store is connected to more than one Printful account, since this can cause conflicts.
6. Click Refresh data on your store in the Printful Dashboard.

If the error still points to a problem on Shopify's side (for example, still showing “Unavailable Shop” after the checks above), reach out to Shopify support directly, since the cause is on their platform rather than Printful's.

Why do I get “You already have a location with this name” in Shopify?

This means a Printful location already exists in your Shopify store's location list, usually left over from a previous connection. In Shopify Admin → Settings → Locations, find Printful under All locations. First deactivate and then delete it; afterwards, you can try the connection process again.

Why does Shopify say I've reached my shipping profile limit?

Shopify caps stores at 100 delivery (shipping) profiles. If you're at that limit, new Printful shipping profiles can't be created, and you'll see an error referencing the maximum number of profiles.

Review your existing shipping profiles in Shopify, and delete any that are no longer needed. You may also create a new custom profile and move products to it with similar shipping rates, then delete the unused profiles. But be aware that any shipping price updates on Printful won't sync automatically to Shopify

Once you've narrowed down the list of shipping profiles, click Refresh data in your Printful Dashboard.

Product publishing errors

Why does publishing a product to Shopify fail?

A handful of things can block a product from publishing:

• Store issues: Confirm your store shows as Active in Printful with no sync errors. If it doesn't, work through the connection and sync issues above first.
• Too many variants: Shopify supports up to 100 variants per product. Reduce the variant count if you're over that limit.
• Template vs. catalog products: If you published from a saved template, duplicate the template and publish the copy. If you published directly from the Printful catalog, recreate the product from scratch, save it as a new template, and publish that instead.

Why do I see “Too many requests” or “Daily variant limit reached” when publishing?

This comes from Shopify's own API rate limits, not from Printful. Shopify throttles how many requests (including new product variants) can be created in a day. Wait and try publishing again later; there's no workaround on the Printful side for this limit.

Why can't I add variants to my Shopify product?

If the error mentions that a name can't be set for an option value linked to a metafield, Shopify is blocking the change because one or more of your product's options are linked to a metafield, which Shopify doesn't support for adding new variants.

To fix it: open the product's options in Shopify, click the linked option (shown with a link icon), then click the option name and choose to disconnect it from the metafield. Once all affected options are unlinked, you should be able to add variants again.

Why aren't my Shopify collections showing up in Printful?

Printful only pulls in manual collections. If you created an automated (smart) collection in Shopify, it won't sync, since smart collections use rules rather than a manually curated product list. Create a manual collection instead if you'd like it to appear in Printful.

Why isn't my Shopify order showing up in Printful?

Why isn't my Shopify order marked as fulfilled after Printful ships it?

This typically happens when an imported order was edited before fulfillment, for example if an item was removed and a new product added manually. Editing an order this way can break the connection Printful uses to send tracking information back automatically.

If this happens, manually send the tracking information to your customer and mark the order as fulfilled in Shopify. 

Shipping errors

Why does Shopify say Printful doesn't ship to a certain country?

If shipping is unavailable for a specific destination even though your shipping profiles look correct, check whether that country is included in one of your active markets under Shopify Admin → Markets. A destination that isn't part of an active market won't be offered at checkout.

Inventory sync issues

Why does my product show 0 inventory in Shopify?

If a product goes out of stock in Printful, we automatically push its Shopify inventory to 0. This is expected, and inventory will sync back up automatically once the item is back in stock, so no action is needed on your end.

If inventory shows 0 in Shopify, but the product should be in stock in Printful:

1. Try disabling and re-enabling fulfillment for that product.
2. Check whether the item is out of stock specifically in your store's selling region, since stock levels can vary by region.
3. Click Refresh data on your store in Printful.

Why does my product show as out of stock even though inventory shows 9999?

An inventory count of 9999 means Printful is reporting the item as in stock, so an “out of stock” label pointing elsewhere is usually a Shopify-side or theme display issue:

1. Confirm the product is synced and that Printful (or Multiple locations) is selected under the product variant's Inventory section on Shopify.
2. Try switching to a default Shopify theme (like Dawn) to see if the issue clears, since some custom themes miscalculate stock display.
3. Check the product's inventory adjustment history in Shopify for changes made by another app or a staff account.
4. If none of this resolves it, contact Shopify support, since inventory display beyond what Printful reports is managed on their side.
