If you’re using Branding & Fulfillment services to store custom materials—like pack-ins or custom packaging—for your orders, you may need to assign Harmonized System (HS) codes to those materials. These codes help simplify the customs process for international shipments.
HS codes are used by customs authorities to identify what type of product is being shipped. Providing the correct code helps prevent delays at customs.
If you sell products across borders, this is what you need to do:
- Go to Warehouse → Inventory in your Printful Dashboard and select your product.
- Find your product HS code in the European Customs Portal by choosing a section and chapter that best describes your product. Carefully read the whole chapter to find the right code.
- Add the code to your product and its variants separately within the HS code field.
- Click Save and continue with the next product.
When do I need to add an HS code?
You only need to add an HS code if your branding materials are shipped across borders. These situations require a code:
- International shipments involving branding materials
- Shipments leaving or entering the EU
There are some cases where these codes are not needed:
- Pack-ins and custom packaging
- Domestic shipments
- Shipments between EU member states
What happens if I don’t add an HS code?
If your branding material is part of an international shipment and doesn’t have an HS code, the order will be placed on temporary hold. You’ll receive an email update, and you’ll have 30 days to add the missing code.
Once the code is added, the order will be processed. If the code isn’t added within 30 days, the order will be canceled and refunded.
