In certain states, specific types of clothing are exempt from sales tax, which includes many items in the Printful catalog. Currently, six states where Printful is registered have tax laws that exempt items like leggings, shorts, rash guards, and sports bras from sales tax.
Clothing exemptions by state
Here’s a breakdown of where and how these exemptions apply:
- Massachusetts: Clothing is non-taxable if the retail price is 175 USD or less per item. Printful’s leggings, shorts, rash guards, and sports bras are exempt.
- Vermont: Most clothing is exempt from sales tax. Printful’s leggings, shorts, rash guards, and sports bras are exempt.
- Pennsylvania: Clothing is generally tax-exempt, with some exceptions. Printful’s leggings, shorts, rash guards, and sports bras are exempt. Swimsuits and bikinis are taxable.
- Minnesota: Most clothing is non-taxable. Printful’s leggings, shorts, rash guards, and sports bras are exempt.
- New Jersey: Most articles of clothing are tax-exempt. Printful’s leggings, shorts, rash guards, and sports bras are exempt.
- Rhode Island: Clothing is exempt if the retail price is 250 USD or less per item. Printful’s leggings, shorts, rash guards, and sports bras qualify.
Keep in mind:
- These exemptions apply only to qualifying clothing items. Accessories, home products, and other non-apparel items (like totes and bags) are still taxable.
- If your order includes both taxable and non-taxable items, tax will be applied only to the taxable portion.
