Embroidery backing is a supportive layer added to fabric during embroidery. It stabilizes the material and gives the stitches a strong surface to hold onto. This keeps your design looking sharp and helps it last over time.
Because different fabrics behave differently during embroidery, we use various types of backing based on the product material and design placement.
Types of embroidery backing we use
Tear-away backing
This is a lightweight backing that’s easy to remove. After embroidery, the extra backing is torn away, leaving just a bit inside the design to keep it stable.
Used for:
- Dad hats
- Lightly structured snapbacks
- Baseball caps
- Bucket hats
- Tote bags
- Hoodies
- Other items made from thicker fabrics
Cut-away backing
This type is thicker and sturdier. It’s designed for delicate or stretchy fabrics that need extra support. After embroidery, the extra backing is trimmed around the edges, leaving a small ¼″ (3–6 mm) border.
We also add a layer of tear-away backing underneath for even more stability. This helps prevent stitches from sinking into soft or elastic fabrics.
- Used for:
- T-shirts
- Beanies
- Thin or stretchy materials
No backing
Some products, such as backpacks or structured snapback front panels, are made from thick, firm materials that don’t need any extra support during embroidery.
What backing colors do we use?
To help the backing blend in with the garment, we choose colors based on fabric type:
- White backing for light garments and all headwear that requires only a tear-away backing
- Black backing for dark garments
- Semi-transparent backing for t-shirts, especially white or lightweight fabric, to reduce visibility
Embroidery backing may not be visible on the outside, but it plays a key role in making your design look great and last longer.
