California Proposition 65 is a law that requires businesses to warn customers in California if their products contain certain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
As a store owner, you’re responsible for showing these warnings to your California customers before they complete a purchase. This law applies to both online and in-person sales.
What do I need to do?
If you sell products that contain any chemicals listed under Proposition 65, you must clearly display a warning message on your store - ideally right in the product description.
Several products in the catalog contain chemicals that require a Proposition 65 warning. When you add these items to your store, you’ll have the option to include the warning automatically in the product description. You can turn this off, but the warning must still be shown somewhere before purchase.
Not adding a warning might lead to legal action from the State of California, so it’s important to follow the rules.
