Navigating US sales tax can be complex, especially when selling across different platforms. To simplify this, many states have marketplace facilitator laws that require the platform to handle taxes for you. This means that for certain stores, we won't charge you tax because the marketplace has already collected it from your customer and remitted it to the state.
When marketplace tax collection applies
We recognize tax collection from the following platforms:
- Etsy
- Amazon
- eBay
- Big Cartel (While not a true marketplace, Big Cartel also collects sales tax on your behalf)
If one of these platforms is collecting tax for the destination state, we won’t charge you sales tax on automatically imported orders from that store.
When sales tax may still apply
If the marketplace doesn’t collect sales tax for a particular state, we may still apply sales tax to the order. This tax logic only applies to automatically imported orders. If you place the orders manually, sales tax will be charged where applicable.
How resale certificates factor in
If you have a valid resale certificate, you can submit it to us to apply for tax exemption. This ensures we won’t charge tax on your qualifying orders, regardless of which platform they come from.
