Amazon requires the products you sell on its marketplace to have a unique identifier, like a UPC (Unique Product Code) or a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number). If you create a product that doesn’t have an identifier, you must apply for a GTIN Exemption.
Note: You’ll need to make a GTIN Exemption request for each product category and each store where you want to create a new generic product without any product identifier.
Here’s how you can find out if your products need a GTIN Exemption:
- From your Amazon dashboard, go to Catalog > Add Products, select Blank form, and click Start.
- In the Product Identity tab, go to General Listing Content. You’ll need to fill in the field Item Name. Amazon will automatically fill in the Product Type field based on the name you added. From there, click Confirm if the information is accurate or Select other to correct it.
- Once you’ve completed the 2 fields, more options will appear in the same tab. Ensure that the field Item Type Keyword is completed, and tick the options This product does not have a brand name and I don’t have a Product ID.
- If an exemption is needed, you’ll see a pop-up indicating that the GTIN/UPC exemption has been approved.
- Click Acknowledge.
And you’re done!
Note: in some cases, the exemption may take up to an hour to become effective.
